Spondi, an ode to flavour

Foie Gras- Mandarine- Xocopili Chocolate Macarron

Spondi restaurant has its home in Pagrati for 20 years now. I was a guest at their 20th birthday but given the opportunity I would certainly visit in any occasion, celebratory or not.

Established back in 1996 by Apostolos Trastelis, the two-Michelin starred restaurant has undoubtedly made a lasting statement in the map of Athenian gastronomy. Elegance, refinement and exquisite taste are a few merits that have given Spondi the most favourable critiques worldwide. With the first accolade acquired in 2002 and the second in 2008, you can expect nothing less than exceptional quality and cooking skill. Living up to its reputation, for the 20th year anniversary the menu was prepared by a 3* chef, Eric Frechon.

Frechon left his three star kitchen at Epicure, hotel Le Bristol Paris, only briefly to join the celebrations of Spondi here in Athens. The connection of Frechon and Spondi looks back in time, when Spondi was fresh in the map, in the beginning of its amasing gastronomic journey. Trastelis and Frechon have dreamed up a lot of the exquisite flavours we tasted on the anniversary celebrations. The menu was exotic and summery, personal favourites being the squid ink rice souffle with tandoori shrimps and the absolutely divine pistachio dessert.

There are many reasons to love Spondi, fine French cuisine with a Greek touch, great service and a well stocked wine cellar being the strongest. What I love the most though is the location, Pagrati. Just off of the lively Varnava square, Spondi is nested in a neoclassical building from the turn of the century with a wonderful garden. In the low-key neighbourhood of Pagrati, the lavish green garden makes for a great escape from the buzz of the center. A shelter you can indulge your taste buds in. Check out the menu here.

From Athens with love,

Eugenia
